Homes that have installed pumps don't just benefit from lowered emissions; they're taking much of their heat from an endless renewable source that is environmentally friendly and are using a technology that can actually lower your monthly household bills. And, if the Renewable Heat Incentive gets the go ahead, you could actually begin to make money for every unit of energy you generate in your home - giving you an added bonus of extra income over a guaranteed length of time. For those of you unaware of how they work, they either extract heat from the air or the ground, which they compress into higher temperatures that are fed into your home or business to heat your water supply.

It is estimated that the majority of pumps have an efficiency level of around 3:1, meaning that for every one unit of electricity it takes to power the heat pump you get three units of energy in return. This could equate to huge savings on your heating bills. They are ideal for the British climate. Predominantly used in much cooler Scandinavian countries, air source pumps can be used in temperatures as low as -15oC, whereas ground source pumps will generate heat all year round. What's more, these pumps in particular are quite simple to retrofit with minimal building work required in most cases and they hardly need any maintenance.
