Sump pumps and the systems that they are incorporated in come in a number of configurations. Ideally there should be two water pumps to insure that your basement is pumped out if it should flood. That would be one main water pump and one backup pump. The backup pump is designed to kick in should the main Air Source Heat Pump be overloaded or fail completely.

Nothing is Fool Proof. However; nothing is fool proof and several different scenarios can be easily drawn up that leave a basement flooded, even with two pumps. To begin with, the electricity could fail in a storm and then the batteries on the backup system can eventually run down, which would leave a basement flooded.

No Electricity Required. The main benefit of a water powered sump pump is that it doesn't rely on electricity for its power. This means of course, that even if the power is shut off, the pump will pump water anyway. However; a water powered water pump, while still pumping a lot of water won't pump as much as some of the best electrical water pumps.

A Water and Electricity Powered System. This is why many people choose to go with a water powered pump as their main sump pump and then back it up with a battery powered axillary pump if their basement is prone to deluges in sever rain storms.
