A surface pump is put on the ground near the well or in the basement of the house. It is connected to the storage tank where water that comes out is stored. This kind of pump operates through suction which means that it uses air pressure to draw water. The more powerful the pump is, the more air pressure it can generate. A pump that has 40psi (measure of air pressure) is more powerful than a pump with 20 psi. It can be powered by fuel or by solar energy. Some surface pumps have the jet assembly near the motor while some have the jet assembly submerged in water.

A submersible pump is a pump where the motor, impeller, jet assembly is encased in a cylindrical casing and submerged into the water. A tiny hole is made for the electrical wiring to run through going up so it can be plugged into an electrical outlet. This is recommended for wells deeper than 25 feet.
