They work on a similar principle to a household refrigerator. Just as a fridge extracts heat from its inside, air source heat pumps extract heat from the outside air, even when the temperature outside is as cold as -15c. The heat extracted from the air is absorbed into a fluid, which is pumped through a heat exchanger in the heat pump. The low grade heat extracted by the refrigeration system is then passed through a heat pump compressor, and is then concentrated into a higher temperature of heat which can be used to heat your home.
This kind of system will consistently provide a steady and reasonably high temperature of heat for your home, but you may find that you need to keep a standard boiler as a back-up during the winter months to really keep the cold away.
